Austin 360; Sybil Danning will receive inaugural Defender of the Universe Award at Other Worlds Austin

The 2016 slate of Other Worlds Austin includes the Texas premieres of “The Tribe,” the horror feature “Bed of the Dead, and “Battledream Chronicles” (the first animated feature to play the fest)  as well as a retrospective screening of Roger Corman’s legendary 1980 Star Wars knockoff “Battle Beyond the Stars.”

Science fiction can point to a brighter future. Other Worlds Austin hopes to play its part by encouraging more women filmmakers to work in the genre through the new Mary Shelley Award, celebrating the legacy of the Frankenstein creator.

Last weekend's Other Worlds Austin has returned to its home planet, but the inaugural year of the city's first dedicated science fiction film festival leaves the winners of its awards, the Cthulhies, behind on Earth.

The big winner in the features category was cause-and-effect crime thriller Time Lapse. Written and directed by Bradley King, it received its Texas premiere as the festival's centerpiece film, and went on to take best feature, best script, best actress for Danielle Panabaker, and best score.
