Austin, TX – Other Worlds Film Festival is excited to announce the first feature for its Orbiter Year-Round Series in 2019: the Texas premiere of the SciFi action comedy AXCELLERATOR. This special screening will take place on Wednesday, June 26 (7:30pm) at Galaxy Highland 10 Theatre, the new (and old) home of Other Worlds Film Festival and its Monthly Orbiter Series. Director David Giancola will be in attendance and will do a Q&A after the film.
AXCELLERATOR, which was featured at Sci-Fi London and the Boston Sci-Film Festival, stars Sam J. Jones, Sean Young, Laura Jones, Ryan Wesen, Maxwell Caulfield, and John James.
In this cheeky film, a thief carjacks his way into a handheld teleportation device and a headlining slot on the government’s most wanted list. He teams up with a recently fired checkout clerk to survive and get back to Arizona to pick up her dog from the vet.
“Axcellerator conjures up the pure joy of the action cinema of the 80s,” says Bears Rebecca Fonté, OW Founder and Artistic Director, “like the unsuspected gem you discovered on the shelves of the video store. Sam J. Jones is no longer out to “save everyone of us,” and instead takes on all comers as a ruthless gun-for-hire. Plus, this probably has the most explosions of any film we’ve ever shown.”
About the Director:
David Giancola has been an iconoclast from an early age. At 19, with no training and a meager budget, he wrote and directed the cult science fiction film TIME CHASERS (1994). Giancola has directed and/or produced over twenty-five feature films, including ICEBREAKER (2000), LIGHTNING – FIRE FROM THE SKY (2001), and MOONLIGHT & MISTLETOE (2008).
Giancola also wrote and directed the critically acclaimed documentary ADDICTED TO FAME (2012), which the late Roger Ebert called, "Probably the best movie about the making of a B-Movie ever made.” He is the founder and owner of Edgewood Studios.
About the Cast:
Sam J. Jones, in addition to starring in the cult classic FLASH GORDON (1980), has appeared in 10 (1979), MY CHAFUFFEUR (1986), and as the title character in the short-lived NBC sci-fi series THE HIGHWAYMAN (1987).
John James is most well-known for his ten-year role as Jeff Colby on the 1980s prime time TV soaps DYNASTY (1981) and THE COLBYS (1985). He semi-retired from acting for fifteen years, with the notable exception being his role in the action thriller ICEBREAKER (2000) with Sean Astin and Bruce Campbell.
Sean Young has graced the screens of myriad notable films, including BLADE RUNNER (1982), DUNE (1984), STRIPES (1981), NO WAY OUT (1987), WALL STREET (1987), COUSINS (1989), and ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE (1994). She currently resides in Austin, Texas – home of Other Worlds Film Festival.
Maxwell Caulfield, the British-American film, stage, and television actor and singer, has appeared in films such as ELECTRIC DREAMS (1984), GREASE 2 (1982), THE BOYS NEXT DOOR (1985), THE SUPERNATURALS (1986), SUNDOWN: THE VAMPIRE RETREAT (1989), WAXWORK 2 (1992), GETTYSBURG (1993), THE REAL BLOND (1997), and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE (1997).
Laura James rose to prominence after winning the nineteenth cycle of AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL (2012) and went on to star in S.W.A.T. (2018), and AMERICAN WOMAN (2018).
