Announcing: Orbiter Series’ Summer Slate 2018

AUSTIN, TX – Other Worlds Austin SciFi Film Festival is proud to announce the next four screenings (June-September) in its Orbiter Year-Round Series. The films include one World and three Texas premieres. All films will be screened at Flix Brewhouse.

“This year’s Orbiter Series features a bit of everything we love,” says Bears Fonté, OWA Founder and Artistic Director, “and will provide SciFi and horror lovers appetizer portions of what the December festival showcases.”

“Now in our fifth year, I am so proud to see what Other Worlds has become. We have filmmakers reaching out to us for our year-round screening series when they won’t be able to play the festival, which is really pretty amazing”

The films in the Summer Orbiter Series include the Texas premiere of the SciFi thriller, 7 SPLINTERS IN TIME; the Texas premiere of the crazy dystopian, ROCK STEADY ROW; the World premiere of the tense Horror film, THE PERFECT HOST: A SOUTHERN GOTHIC TALE; and the Texas premiere of the hilarious Horror experiment, SEX MADNESS REVEALED.

"Over the last four years it has been exciting to watch Other Worlds grow,” says Dan Repp, OWA Senior Programmer and Event Director. “Our audience has helped us define what our festival is, and they have set a standard for us that we strive to meet and exceed with every event we host. It has also been a pleasure championing our alumni filmmakers and witnessing them hone their craft as they move on to new projects."

"I look forward to every Orbiter screening because I love the opportunity to focus on one film at a time, provide an intimate setting where the filmmakers are approachable, and help the films we screen get the attention they deserve. It's also a great opportunity to push the boundaries of our programming and create a dialogue with our audience about what defines Science Fiction and Horror."

7 SPLINTERS IN TIME (Texas premiere)

Writer/Director: Gabriel Judet-Weinshel (will be in attendance and will do a Q&A after the screening.)

Synopsis: A detective investigates a murder, only to find that the victim is ... himself. Soon, he discovers multiple versions of himself, not all of them friendly.

Starring: Edoardo Ballerini (BOARDWALK EMPIRE, THE SOPRANOS), Emmanuelle Chriqui (ENTOURAGE, DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN), Austin Pendleton (AMISTAD, FINDING NEMO), Lynn Cohen (MUNICH, THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE), Al Sapienza (HOUSE OF CARDS, MARGIN CALL)

"7 SPLINTERS IN TIME garnered a ton of attention from its premiere at Cinequest earlier this year and we were determined to bring it to our audience,” says Repp. “What made it stand out to me is that director Gabriel Judet-Weinshel combines a unique artistic style with a strong narrative. He finds a nice balance between world creating, character development and dynamic visuals that provides one of my favorite cinematic experiences of the year."

7SplintersInTime Poster.jpg

In a dazzling narrative that incorporates the textural richness and depth of art-house cinema, the best elements of pulp science fiction, and the scope of a Hollywood action-thriller, 7 SPLINTERS IN TIME follows in the footsteps of Darren Aronofsky’s 'Pi,' Julian Schnabel’s 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,' with a bit of John Woo’s deliciously entertaining 'Face-Off' thrown in for good measure.

7 SPLINTERS IN TIME is award-winning director Gabriel Judet-Weinshel’s feature debut. Judet-Weinshel’s short films, featurettes, music videos, and commercial work have screened throughout the world at over 100 festivals and on MTV, The Sundance Channel, and CMT. Of his work, the Seattle Weekly writes, ‘His dazzling, archetypal images . . . have a stunning authority that actually pull forth a mythic power.’

Story: Darius is an introverted detective who spends most of his free time looking over a sullen, old lady living next door. When a new murder case turns up, he visits the scene of the crime but discovers something quite peculiar this time around – the dead body is identical to his own. As his day-to-day life begins to blur into a series of erratic and haunting memories, an outlandish childhood friend reaches out and connects. The duo embarks upon a quest to unveil the truth about a traumatic incident that sits at the core of Darius’ recent disturbances.

Notices:

“This movie knows absolutely what it's doing … writer/director Gabriel Judet-Weinshel has crafted a thriller with the DNA of several great artists before him ... 7 SPLINTERS IN TIME will unnerve you with a power of its own. It’s as if David Lynch and Terry Gilliam had a love child.” —Derek McCaw, Fanboy Planet

“The look of this film is exceptional … an auspicious venture into the world of SF, and an impressive first feature. The strange cityscapes, with their buildings that look like exploded hypercubes, the lighting and set-ups, the dramatic shots are all impressive ..." —Mark Cole, Rivets on the Poster

“ …vividly nightmarish… Greg Bennick is excellent as the hyperkinetic mystery figure Luka. Lynn Cohen is a howl as the salty curmudgeon Babs… plenty of eye candy and sometimes there’s the feeling of Fellini on Dexedrine.” —Scott Strickland, The Movie Gourmet

“I saw touches of ERASERHEAD, TWELVE MONKEYS, MAD MAX, CITY OF LOST CHILDREN… " —Robert Emmett, KFJC's "Thoughtline"

“7 SPLINTERS IN TIME succeeds in providing an unparalleled take on the ‘sci-fi-thriller’ as it packs in plenty of suspenseful twists, an intriguing romantic narrative, and consistently ravishing visuals while channeling through intricate themes of youth, love, and identity.” —Peter Koros, CineQuest Film Festival

Wednesday, July 25 (7:30pm):

Starring: Heston Horwin (WIENER VS. BRAIN, SPEECHLESS); Diamond White (TRANSFORMERS: RESCUE BOTS, THE LION GUARD); Logan Huffman (FINAL GIRL, LYMELIFE); Isaac Alisma (I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS PREGNANT, READY SET BLAHE)

"The world that is created in Rock Steady Row is bat-shit crazy and a ton of fun,” says Repp. “This film will pair well with any of the in-house brewed beers at Flix. I think I'll have a Flix Golden Ale as its description matches the film going experience, "Crisp, Light and Satisfying!" This film combines the post-apocalyptic action and suspense of the Mad Max Series with the insanity and humor of Animal House. A perfect mid-summer movie!"

"Director Trevor Stevens and writer Bomani Story have created a brilliantly original and imaginative genre mashup, turbo powered with stylish production design. The film is set in a cleverly abstracted realm of existence -- a world where pencils kill people and it takes a band of badass women to rescue a mansel in distress. It's a violent, frat-comedy western with a perfectly-pitched, graphic novel villain and a budding, brooding Eastwood-esque hero." -- Paul Sbrizzi, Narrative Feature Programmer, Slamdance Film Festival

Story: When a lone freshman arrives at Rock Steady University he discovers that the campus is controlled by two warring factions: Kappa Brutus Omega and The High Society. His bike is stolen and shuffled into the fraternities' most valuable source of income, the bicycle market.  Turning the University into more of a war zone than a place of education, the freshman plays the rival fraternities against one another to reclaim his stolen bicycle.

Wednesday, August 22 (7:30pm):

THE PERFECT HOST: A SOUTHERN GOTHIC TALE (World Premiere)

Director: Derrick Sims

Synopsis: While sorting her dead grandmother's affairs, a young woman boards in an eerie, southern mansion and soon discovers the matriarch may desire more than just her company.

Starring: Suilma Rodriguez (GOTTA KICK IT UP!, LOOKING: THE MOVIE); Janis Duley (CLOSE CALLS, A PHONE IN THE ATTIC); Chase Ryan Jeffery (AMERICAN VIRGIN, EXPOSED); Tom Herod Jr. (ONCE IS ENOUGH); Siobhan Doherty (SUPER(FLUOUS), MY NAME IS BURNS)

“I had the privilege of introducing writer/director/cinematographer Derick Sims’ last film to the world, when COME MORNING premiered at Austin Film Festival in 2012,” says Fonté. “THE PERFECT HOST features the same measured tension and complex character interactions as that film, this time set in a small Arkansas town and with a classic Southern Gothic aesthetic. We are so lucky to have snagged this World Premiere of a very talented southern filmmaker.”

SEX MADNESS REVEALED (Texas premiere)

Director: Tim Kirk

Synopsis: Jimmy Morris (Patton Oswalt) has a special surprise guest on his podcast, The Film Dick. It's Chester Holloway (Rob Zabrecky) who reveals all the secrets behind the mysterious 1939 film, SEX MADNESS.

Starring: Patton Oswalt (THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY, SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD); Rob Zabrecky (A GHOST STORY, DECAY)

Notorious comedian Patton Oswalt and renowned magician Rob Zabrecky star in Tim Kirk’s (DIRECTOR’S COMMENTARY) latest experiment in how to tell tales of terror. Taking the form of an audio commentary that plays out over the little known 1938 STD propaganda film SEX MADNESS, the voice of a persnickety film blogger interviews the descendant of the original motion picture’s director who harbors a nefarious secret.

"Director Tim Kirk created a new cinematic experience a few years back with Director's Commentary: Terror of Frankenstein,” says Repp, “which we screened as part of our Orbiter series. He is returning this September to present SEX MADNESS REVEALED. He has taken the 1938 exploitation film that warns teens about the dangers of syphilis and added a commentary that tells a horrific and hilarious story of mad doctors, conspiracy theories, and the desperation of a filmmaker with a crooked agenda. Patton Oswalt delivers a memorable vocal performance as a film critic unraveling all the "truths" of the making of the film. This will be one of the most unique experiences you will have at the theater this year or maybe decade."
