Announcing Final Wave of Films and Defender of the Universe Award

Austin, TX -- Other Worlds Austin SciFi Film Festival has announced its final wave of programming for Austin’s first and only SciFi film festival (Dec 7-10) at Flix Brewhouse, as well as special event trivia show THE BIG QUIZ THING at OTHER WORLDS AUSTIN.

The slate includes the North American premieres of TUFTLAND and RESTORATION; the Texas premiere of Closing Night Film CURVATURE; and the special retro screening of the 1979 Disney classic THE BLACK HOLE, with Defender of the Universe Awardee director Gary Nelson.

In addition, Other Worlds Austin will present three fantastic shorts programs, one entirely dedicated to the horror sidebar, Under Worlds Austin.

“Every year we welcome submissions from all over the galaxy, and every year we seem to have harder choices,” says Bears Fonté, OWA Founder and Artistic Director. “Our Under Worlds program is especially strong for year two, including the Finnish brooding horror TUFTLAND—sort of a ROSEMARY’S BABY meets MARTHA MARCY MAE MARLENE. I met writer/director Roope Olenius a few years ago when I programmed BUNNY THE KILLER THING at SF Indiefest, and he reached out to me with his directorial debut.”

“HOSTILE and FLORA are both crossover Horror/SciFi films that will please fans of both genres,” says Jordan Brown, Associate Artistic Director, “and I love FLORA’s 1929 setting, and botanical backdrop. RESTORATION is another North American Premiere and plays like an Australian episode of BLACK MIRROR.”

“If I had to pick one film I am dying to see on the big screen,” says Fonté, “it has to be our retrospective screening of THE BLACK HOLE with director Gary Nelson. I remember demanding my parents take me to see it (I was four, I think) and being utterly terrified. I can’t believe Disney made this film. With Maximilian Schell, Anthony Perkins, Robert Forster, Ernest Borgnine and the voice talents of Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens, the film plays as essentially ‘20,000 Leagues In Space’ with spectacular production design and a mesmerizing score from John Barry.” Nelson, whose other directing credits include FREAKY FRIDAY and ALLAN QUARTERMAIN AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD, will be OWA’s second Defender of the Universe after 2016’s Sybil Danning. “Nelson is a lifer,” says Fonté, “from directing for TV Westerns like Have Gun – Will Travel and Gunsmoke, to comedies like Gilligan’s Isle and Get Smart, to a long relationship with Disney, Gary helped define the role of a director in what the FCC chairman had just deemed ‘a vast wasteland.’ Later, as he moved into film, his finely-tuned skills turned what could have been genre-knock-offs into classic adventure stories in their own right.”

Also at the festival this year, OWA will venture into midnight madness territory with the World Premiere of PURPLE FURY.  “As for PURPLE FURY,” Fonté demurs, “I can neither confirm nor deny that it features the talents of George Miller, Deep Purple, Prince and Stone Temple Pilots. Roger Waters claimed they never actively tried to sync Dark Side of the Moon with Wizard of Oz, and I’m pretty sure no one ever intended this pairing either.”

Other Worlds Austin has previously announced a special retro screening of the SciFi cult classic EVENT HORIZON, with screenwriter Philip Eisner and the Texas premiere of Opening Night Film BEYOND SKYLINE.

The Big Quiz Thing at Other Worlds Austin

As seen in the world’s first bar-trivia TV show, the Big Quiz Thing—creators of the finest corporate and private live-trivia entertainment nationwide—brings its multimedia game-show spectacular to Other Worlds Austin for a tremendous sci-fi team-trivia game show! Hosted by America’s premier live quizmaster and the BQT’s founder, Noah Tarnow, the Big Quiz Thing is way more than a bar quiz: it’s a full interactive quiz show spectacular, with video and audio puzzles, the Lightning Round, the Buzzertastic Finale, and the best, most “figureoutable” trivia questions anywhere, all played via the BQT’s unique digital answer system (play on your smartphone or another digital device). Plus, there’s hope for the less geeky: Smart-Ass Points for wrong but funny answers. All for honor, glory, and prizes. Learn more about the Big Quiz Thing at BigQuizThing.com.

The Big Quiz Thing at Other Worlds Austin debuts on Friday, December 8. “Noah is one of my best friends from college and was the guy we all fought over for team trivial pursuit (remember board games?), says Fonté. “He’s a total know-it-all in the worst connotation of that phrase, and a smart aleck. I challenged him at my college reunion to devise a version of his show that was all SciFi to see if he could stump our fans. If you’ve done trivia shows at bars, this is nothing like that.”
