2nd Grade

Other Worlds will host its first-ever Virtual Orbiter screening with the SciFi comedy JAMES VS HIS FUTURE SELF, offering a live Q&A with Director Jeremy Lalonde and star/producer Jonas Chernick on May 6 (8:00PM CST). The film follows an uptight time-travelling obsessed young scientist and his visit from his nihilistic future self. He's told that he needs to give up his dream of becoming the world's first time traveler, or else. But when he won't go along with the plan, it becomes a wicked battle of man versus himself. No matter how old I get, I have one fatal weakness: the desire to impulsively cut my own hair. (Yes, quarantine has been rough.)

The first time I ever cut my own hair was in 2nd grade. A few weeks before, my sister had been getting her hair cut and, not to be left out, I decided to tell my mom I wanted bangs. So I sat down in the stylist’s chair and ended up with bangs….that I immediately decided I didn’t actually want. Now, any normal child would probably just wait for their hair to grow out till the bangs were no longer a problem…I’m not that kind of person.

Two weeks later I’m sitting in class at my desk, and I can’t help but be transfixed by the pair of scissors in my crayon box. I wish I could say there was some sort of internal struggle not to cut my hair in the middle of our math lesson, but there was not.

I lifted the scissors our of the box, took them to those bangs, and left the blond hair sitting on my desk. I don’t really get why it was such a big deal to my teacher, but I ended up getting written up. My dad freaked out when I got home and sent me to the salon next door to try and fix it, resulting in the period of time where I ended up with a pseudo-mullet… Maybe if I could go back and stop myself, just maybe I wouldn’t have to deal with that story being retold at every family reunion… But let’s be honest if I didn’t do it then it would have happened in 4th grade…and it would have still happened again in high school…And again last week…

At least I’ve gotten better about cutting it straighter.
