Other Worlds Austin’s next Orbiter screening is the Texas premiere if ISLAND ZERO on Wednesday, September 20 at Flix Brewhouse.
In the film, a fishing community on a remote Maine island finds itself suddenly cut off from the rest of the world after the ferry stops coming. When people start to vanish, the terrified survivors realize that someone - or something - is hunting them.
What if you were cut off from the world, stuck on an island with no electricity or cell service and food dwindling? Oh, and something terrifying is hunting you. Who would you want by your side? More specifically, what ONE fictional scientist would you want helping you in this situation and why?
Some of the OWA staff gives you their answers. Here’s Tessa Morrison, Programmer and Outreach Director, with her take:
If I were stranded on a literal island (and not a metaphorical one that alluded to my mental state) and I had to pick one scientist to have as a companion, it would be Buckaroo Banzai. Along with being a stylish fellow who bares a striking resemblance to one Peter Weller, dude is a super well-rounded, renaissance man; he's a rock star, doctor(neurosurgeon), test pilot, and physicist.
He also surrounds himself with a large entourage (not quite at Will Smith entourage levels circa WILD WILD WEST, but still) that would stop at nothing to find us. Most of his main group is comprised of his band The Hong Kong Cavaliers, ALL of which happen to be multidisciplinary scientists in various fields of study. Along with his scientist team bandmates, there are other groups at his beck-and-call like The Rug Suckers, The Blue Blaze Irregulars, and The Radar Rangers. Given this pool of resources and talented friends we would work through any issues while stuck on an island and either escape or get found in fairly short order.
Besides that glaringly stellar reason, in the meantime if we got bored of the sound of the waves lapping and seagulls cawing, Banzai would just make and play a coconut electric guitar in a jiff! Coconuts are a great resource for the MacGuyver's and Banzai's of the world.
You starting to feel the steady creep of depression and suicidal thoughts that you might never leave this island? Homeboy will just lay some optimistic esoteric bullshit on you about how you can't run away from your problems. As Buckaroo always says, "No matter where you go, there you are." What? Ok, sure buddy, I'm uncertain as to why that cheers me up, but it just does.
Pretty sure we could get a coconut radio going and the signal would get picked up by the boys in the Radar Rangers and we'd be well on our way off this stupid island and I wouldn't have to listen to him talk about that time he removed a bullet from a guy's brain while doing a guitar solo at Carnegie Hall. Perfect Tommy has got nothing on you. YES! You've told me about that one already Banzai, like 5 times. No matter where I go, THERE YOU ARE. Get me out of here. Dr. Sidney Zweibel, save me.
