OWA Recommends: Now Streaming in August 2017

How is everyone enjoying the summer? Here in Austin, we have hit multiple triple-digit days - and in a row, mind you. Of course, we would love to spend more time outside enjoying this wonderful time of year, but some days it is honestly just too hot. Thank goodness for these new SciFi and Horror additions that our favorite streaming services have added this month! Now, if you don’t mind, we are going to find some AC and start on the list below!

NETFLIX

THE MATRIX (1999)
Available August 1st

Computer programmer “Neo” learns the truth about the ‘reality’ in which he lives and joins a rebellion against the machines alongside other freed individuals. Marked as one of the greatest science fiction films on multiple lists winning four Academy Awards and added to the National film Registry for preservation in 2012, this film is undeniably a classic.

Of course, The sequels THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003) and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (2003) are also being added to Netflix. All three films combined mark one of the highest grossing media franchises of all time.

INNERSPACE (1987)
Available August 1st

Meg Ryan, Martin Short, and Dennis Quaid star in this scifi comedy directed by Joe Dante. A Navy test pilot is miniaturized in a top-secret experiment only to be accidentally injected into the body of a hypochondriac. Fun from beginning to end, this 1980s flick is smart, exhilarating, and funny.

SMALL SOLDIERS (1998)

With a PG rating, this film is one that is great for the whole family.

WILD WILD WEST (1999)
Available August 1st

This steampunk western action comedy (yes, that is a lot of genre combos) stars Will Smith and Kevin Kline. Yes, it may have predominantly negative reviews earning eight Razzie awards, but it’s worth a watch for the fun steampunk accessories and inventions. Plus like most of Will Smith’s films during this time period, he sang the promotional theme song for the film also entitled “Wild Wild West.”

MARVEL’S THE DEFENDERS (2017)
Available August 18th

This Netflix miniseries is the culmination of the Marvel/Netflix series Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. As it premieres on August 28th, there really is nothing to review yet other than the released premise: the four vigilantes team up in New York City to fight a common enemy: The Hand.
