OWA Netflix SciFi & Horror Recommendations: September 2016

Summer is almost gone and the season of pumpkin spice is about to begin. September brings fall, football, foliage, and, according to what is coming new to Netflix, the season to get caught up on some really great SciFi and Horror TV series. So go grab yourself a PSL (if you’re in Texas like us at OWA, maybe get a cold version) and hunker down because there is a lot to watch this month!

THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (2005)
Available September 1st

This is a remake of the 1979 film of the same name which was based off a novel of the same name. There are some decent scares in this flick, but as remakes go, this is not the strongest. It is worth watching though because... Ryan Reynolds.

BILL & TED’S BOGUS JOURNEY (1991)
Available September 1st

The second film in the Bill & Ted franchise, this SciFi fantasy comedy features the two main leads trying to escape the afterlife challenging the Grim Reaper to games in order to return to the land of the living.

HELLAVATOR, Season 1 (2015)
Available September 1st

In this Blumhouse horror game show, contestants ride a haunted elevator through an abandoned warehouse with each episode centering around a horror legend who committed horrific deeds, tortured people, and/or murdered their victims.

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007)
Available September 1st

Singing, haircuts and shaves, and meat pies - this horror musical has it all.  I want to say more but if you have not seen this film or heard the story at all, I do not want to spoil it for you. Although be warned: every song is this musical is incredibly catching and you might find yourself singing them for weeks.

THE WICKER MAN (2006)
Available September 1st

The original 1973 version is one the most effective horror films so it is hard to see any remake holding a candle to it. However, this film has its moments: i.e. the bee hat.

R.L. STINE’S MOSTLY GHOSTLY 3: ONE NIGHT IN DOOM HOUSE (2016)
Available September 6th

Max Doyle takes some objects from a haunted house to help his ghost friends upsetting a whole bunch of spirits in the process.

SUPERGIRL, Season 1 (2015)
Available September 10th

The biological cousin to Superman and one of the last surviving Kryptonians takes center place in this TV series. This is honestly one of the best new shows to come out of last year and is definitely worth watching - it has heart, action, and great acting.

This is the third season of the incredible horror drama series featuring many Penny Dreadful characters from 19th-century British and Irish fiction.

GOTHAM, Season 2 (2015)
Available September 19th

Gotham is a TV series that features DC Comics characters that appeared in the Batman franchise, primarily a young James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. Be sure to catch up on Season 2 before the new season begins.

MARVEL’S LUKE CAGE, Season 1 (2016)
Available September 30th

Luke Cage is a former convict with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin who now fights crime. The character makes his first appearance in MARVEL’S JESSICA JONES (another series that you need to get caught up on if you have not seen it already!)

SCREAM, Season 2 (2016)
Available September 30th

Based off the slasher film series, this horror TV show follows Emma Duval, a teenage girl who is somehow tied to the town’s dark past. It is an effective, fun, scare of a show that is worth watching.
