OWA Netflix SciFi & Horror Recommendations: April 2016

April is bringing some really fantastic additions in the SciFi and Horror genres on Netflix.  Scroll through to see what you should be watching this month.  And be sure to catch the films that are leaving Netflix before it’s too late!

2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)
Available April 1st

Almost 50 years after its release, this film remains one of the most epic landmarks in SciFi film history. Not to mention the incredibly iconic score. Partially inspired by Arthur C. Clarke’s short story, “The Sentinel,” director Stanley Kubrick and Clarke wrote this incredible screenplay. Grab a bucket of popcorn and take a journey to Jupiter with this space exploration team and their sentient computer HAL. With a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is definitely one you should add to your queue.

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971)
Available April 1st

This dystopian Kubrick flick has garnered a large cult following over the years. Set in futuristic England, this film follows Alex and his rambunctious gang (otherwise known as droogs) as they go on a crime spree.  Beware: this film does get intense at moments.  However, it is worth watching for many reasons. The top two being: 1. The soundtrack includes Wendy Carlos’ ridiculously amazing Moog synthesizer selections. 2. You will finally “get” a heck of a lot of cultural references.

CUJO (1983)
Available April 1st

Horror lovers rejoice! While some may not see this story as one of Stephen’s King’s most terrifying, if you are a dog-lover and/or dog-owner, please know that this film might give you a jolt.  You will never watch BEETHOVEN the same again.

DEEP IMPACT (1998)
Available April 1st

The world is threatened by a falling meteor and the future of mankind is questionable. Despite competition from the similarly themed ARMAGEDDON in the summer of 1998, DEEP IMPACT still had a deep impact on American movie-goers.  Fun fact: domestically, this film was the highest grossing film directed by a woman, Mimi Leder, until TWILIGHT claimed the record in 2008.

EXPLORERS (1985)
Available April 1st

This one is for the kids and the kids-at-heart.  Follow along as young stars Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson’s characters charm the audience and embark on a journey filled with extraterrestrials in this SciFi fantasy film directed by Joe Dante and written by Eric Luke.

THE PHANTOM (1996)
Available April 1st

Alright, superhero film fans, this one's for you.  Billy Zane stars as the seemingly immortal crimefighter, The Phantom, who battles evil in many forms. Some say that this film is liken to be for children due to its lightweight action adventure.  However, it could be a fun Friday night visiting the 90s version of a superhero.  Fun fact: the exterior of the Phantom’s manor was actually Playboy magazine’s Hugh Hefner’s mansion.

THE RUNNING MAN (1987)
Available April 1st

Loosely based off of the 1982 novel of the same name by Stephen King, this SciFi thriller revolves around a dystopian United States between 2017 and 2019.  Professional killers chase convicted criminal “runners” in this latest reality TV show. Watch this movie now so you know what to expect on primetime this time next year.

V FOR VENDETTA (2006)
Available April 1st

The Wachowski Sisters (formerly known as the Wachowski Brothers) really laid on the awesome in this dystopian political thriller.  This dark, stylized, and intelligent flick is not one to miss.  Remember, remember the 5th of November!

HUSH (2016)
Available April 8th

This horror thriller revolves around a deaf woman who is being stalked by a man in her secluded home.  HUSH had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 12, 2016. Variety gave the film a positive review, calling it "one of the more inspired concoctions to emerge from the busy Blumhouse horror-thriller assembly line in recent years."
