OWA Netflix SciFi and Horror Recommendations: October 2016

At last, the fall season has come and Halloween is almost here! Time for s'mores, pumpkin carving, and most importantly, movies and shows that creep you out and take you to other worlds. Here are some of our recommendations that just might inspire a costume or two for any Halloween festivities you have planned this month.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL (SEASON 5)

The smash-hit horror anthology television series rounds off its fifth year with even more scares, frights, and some seriously demented hotel employees. If you’ve ever wanted to watch an immortal blood-sucking Lady Gaga make out with an eyeliner-wearing, drug-addled Matt Bomer, now is your chance.

THE QUEEN OF THE DAMNED (2002)

Anne Rice’s third vampire novel follows the infamous Lestat as he becomes the world’s first vampire rock star. No Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt in this one, folks, but there are still plenty blood-drench sex scenes to make any date night worth talking about. Plus, 90s soulful singer Aaliyah delivers one electric performance as the music-lovin’, sweet-talkin’ queen of all vampires.

iZOMBIE - SEASON 2 (2015-2016)

Right at the height of the zombie frenzy, Rob Thomas came out with something that was both entirely refreshing and reflective of his long history of writing brilliant, sleuthing heroines. Now two years later, iZOMBIE continues to be hilarious, thoughtful, and loaded with truly engaging characters. The narrative arc has been building and now is your chance to catch up before things get weird…er.

SUPERNATURAL - SEASON 11 (2015-2016)

Whatever the magic formula is for creating die-hard loyal fans, this show figured it out. The Winchesters are back at it again, saving people, hunting things, and this time heaven and hell have something to say about it. For those of you not entirely interested in the weird and paranormal, like fine wine, Padalecki and Ackles (the actors who play the two brothers) are aging gorgeously.

I AM THE PRETTY THING THAT LIVES IN THE HOUSE (2016)

Available October 28th

A wonderfully modern ghost tale. Osgood Perkins relies heavily on atmospheric scares, rather than gore to tell his tale of a young nurse who is sent to aid an ailing author, well past her prime. Reality and fiction are blurred in the mind of the author, and soon this horrific bleed will drip into the real life of our protagonist, Lily. This is a good haunted house story for those who, while watching scary movies, need to keep the lights on.

BLACK MIRROR - SEASON 3, PART 1 (2016)

Available October 21st

Anthology series seem to be all the rage and this UK-based science fiction/horror classic takes the cake. Only six episodes long, each new episode questions what is and what may be. More powerhouse hitters take the stage this season with Bryce Dallas Howard and Game of Thrones’ Jerome Flynn having episodes of their own. Our own Stephen King has congratulated the series for its ingenuity and creep factor.

THE UNINVITED (2009)

For a younger generation, Emily Browning will always be little Violet Baudelaire, from the 2004 adaptation of the popular book series, A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS. In other words, she’s already got the well-earned chops to play “Terrified Young Victim”. Anna (Browning) returns home after a short stay in a mental institution, and almost immediately begins to witness images of her dead mother. There are some interesting twists and turns, and at least one good scare that will keep you away from lakes for a while.

SPHERE (1998)

Alien intelligence. Giant spacecrafts. The deep, deep ocean. Sam Jackson as the leader of a nerd science team. Sphere is many things, but predictable is not one of them. Not as big as a cult classic as it could have been, Sphere is undoubtedly hits every notch in the Science Fiction checklist and makes for a fun Sunday-night-in kind of film.

DARK MATTER - SEASON 2 (2016)

Available October 16th

Over the years, Canada has produced some surprisingly fantastic works of science fiction film and television. Dark Matter is nothing less than that. Following a comic book of the same name, six strangers awaken on a speeding spacecraft with no memory of who they are and how they got there. The story that unfolds consists of intrigue, deception, betrayal, and the finest special effects the Syfy channel has to offer.

THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (2009)

This Dutch film inspired by Nazi medical experiments during WWII is not for the squeamish. Three tourists in Germany are kidnapped by a psychotic surgeon who turns them into a conjoined triplet through their gastric systems - the human centipede. I’ll leave it at that.

Be sure to check these titles out before they leave:

DEVIL (2010) - leaving October 16th

THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN (2014) - leaving October 21st

ESTRANGED (2015) – leaving October 16th
