Here at the Seven Sisters Planetarium we are particularly fond of the Pleiades. The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters, is an open star cluster located in the constellation of Taurus. It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth dominated by hot blue and extremely luminous stars and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky.

The name of the Pleiades comes from ancient Greek and refers to the seven divine sisters and their mother Pleione. However, their history has many stories and meanings around the world. Only six of the sisters are distinctly visible to the naked eye. The ancient Greeks explained the sudden disappearance of the seventh star in various narratives from deserting her sisters in shame after taking a mortal husband to that sister being transformed into a comet out of grief.

ANNUAL EVENTS

Every winter, the Seven Sisters Planetarium celebrates our namesake star cluster with a series of events. The main event being our Annual Pleiades Celebration filled with star gazing, food, games, and much more. This year our 35th Annual Pleiades Celebration will be on November 10th. It is an event for the whole family - so be sure to mark your calendar!

In the weeknights following our annual celebration until January, we host the Search for the Lost Pleiad. It is an interactive tour of our Planetarium followed by a star-gazing exhibit outside complete with tour guides and binoculars. We teach the history of the Seven Sisters and enjoy a night under the stars. One of these nights we will find the seventh sister!

For more information regarding these events, information on any other upcoming events, and to purchase tickets, please visit our EVENTS page.

We look forward to celebrating the stars with you!
